Vehicle Insurance

 

According to the BMV in Columbus they currently require the follow as proof of insurance:

 

  1. Bottom line is “Insurance must follow the vehicle”, therefore the “proof” should include the description of the vehicle involved in the Citation.

  2. When I posed the question...”but Joe was driving Jane’s car”…there became two answers:

    1. Jane’s proof of insurance on her car, showing her car on the proof, OR

    2. A copy of Joe’s “Declaration Page” from his insurance policy stating that Joe is covered to drive any vehicle other than his own and/or Jane’s car specifically.

  3. When I posed the question…”but Joe was driving a rental car”…there were two answers as well:

    1. A copy of Joe’s “Declaration Page” from his insurance policy stating that Joe is covered to drive any vehicle other than his own, OR

    2. A letter from Joe’s insurance agent stating he’s covered to drive any vehicle other than his own and/or the rental car specifically.

 

Ultimately, each court will/can define what is proper proof of coverage for their purposes…just thought the above information might be interesting.
